Look no further, perhaps jQuery is the just what you were looking for. jQuery is a light weight JavaScript library that simplifies DOM traversing, DOM manipulation, event handling, animation, and asynchronous calls. Recently. Microsoft announced that jQuery will be shipped with ASP.NET 4.0 but that shouldn't stop you from using jQuery today. Microsoft has already made available a download that will allow you to integrate jQuery intellisense support within Visual Studio 2008.
